Paul Cheater

Paul
Cheater is the associate organist at the United Reformed Church in Oxford. He
is also the organist at the Chapel of St Nicholas, Summer Fields, and organist
of the Parish Church of St Mary, Litton Cheney, in West Dorset.
Paul
studied the organ at Kingswood School in Bath, where he was inspired by the
former Warden of Trinity College of Music, Roger Pope, and the composer John
Byrt, who were members of the Kingswood staff at different times.
From Kingswood, Paul went on to train as a teacher at Westminster
College in Oxford, where he was able to combine his educational training with
further study of the organ at University College, Oxford, under the late John
Webster, then the Professor of Music at the college.
Over
the years, Paul has been able to further his love of music and to provide
pleasure for many, as he has played either as an accompanist or in a solo
capacity in many venues around the world. Such places have ranged from the
smallest of villages to some of the greatest churches and cathedrals in this
country and overseas, notably St Bartholomew’s Church in New York, home to
the largest organ in the city, and the Cathedral of St John the Divine, the
largest cathedral in the world. While in New York, he accompanied a service
which was broadcast on the worldwide web from Trinity Church, Wall Street.
Paul also plays at New College, Keble College and Christ Church Cathedral,
Oxford, as his school’s choir sings evensong there regularly. Recently, he
played at Westminster Cathedral in London.
In
2003, Paul was elected as an Honorary Fellow of the National College of Music
and Arts, for services to music. He is a member of its Executive Board and an
examiner for the college. He is also a Fellow of the Guild of Musicians and
Singers, and an Associate and Fellow of the Royal College of Preceptors.
