Eric Hayward
Eric Hayward was Bandmaster
of the Chelmsford Salvation Army Band and served for
over 27 years. Under his leadership the band visited,
among other places, Crystal Palace in 1965, as a solo
band, and also the Royal Albert Hall. As of 2006 Eric
Hayward is the Chair (General Secretary) of the National
College of Music and Arts, London, following a most
distinguished career. His enthusiasm for the College
(which is now principally an examination board in music,
speech and drama) stems from his own days as a student
of music, during which he was taught by an outstanding
teacher, affiliated to the NCM. As well as being a
Fellow of the National College of Music, he is also a
Fellow of several other learned societies and
institutions.
Under Eric Hayward's direction, the
National College of Music has maintained its place in
the musical arena, and since his appointment the
organisation has been professionally run. From the
outset of his tenure he has ensured that quality has
been controlled appropriately, and it was his initiative
to replace all of the old syllabuses and much more. In
1994, he oversaw the official recognition of the
College's examinations by the Secretary of State for
Education. In recent years he has overseen and
encouraged further change, in particular the inception
of a Patron of the College, currently the journalist and
broadcaster Huw Edwards, and an Advisory Council for the
College, consisting of people distinguished in their
respective fields who have agreed to advise the NCM.
